Happy …

… whatever day. It was originally supposed to be Happy Valentine’s Day, but then I was awoken at 3:30 this morning to inglorious sound of Molly the wonder dog retching by my ear. One of the joys of pet ownership is the occasional gift of upchuck, be the pet a dog or cat. I just wish it didn’t happen while I was sound asleep. By the time it was all cleaned up and the carpet cleaned, I was wide awake. At least it wasn’t hidden like kitty cats tend to do. {*grin*} For some reason, cleaning up after the dog brought to mind the days of the Son’s infancy from long ago when we would undergo poop containment system failure. You know, when the onsie has both legs full and the only sane method of recovery is the emergency shower as you peel the onsie off. Odd how the mind will connect unrelated scenarios like that.

Getting back to Valentine’s Day, L and I have been together and celebrating the day in our own low key way for 39 years now. We met the first day of sophomore year of high school in 1969 and didn’t start dating until the fall of 1971 – not due to a lack of effort on my part. The first time I asked her out, she said she couldn’t because her grandparents were in town and then showed up at the event I asked her to sans grandparents. Needless to say, it was a couple of years later that we actually went on a date. The rest is history – much to the concern of her parents at the time. I think they got really tired of flicking the porch light off and on when I’d bring L home from a date and we’d sit in the car talking for hours in front of their house.

This Valentine is for you, L. I miss the days when we could spend hours cuddling and talking about anything and nothing without life getting in the way. May we return to those days in the future.

Nothing like a little scientific humor to go with the sentiment of the day. (You do recognize Charles Darwin, don’t you?) (You can find this and other scientist Valentines over at Ironic Sans.)

I’m Back ….

Now that Valentine’s Day and President’s Weekend are over, I can safely return to the web. You never can tell when an errant rose thorn will attack. {*grin*}

L was down from the mountains for the weekend. It was the first time a few years that we have been able to spend Valentine’s Day together. Being the uber romantic that I am, I took her to the Republican Lincoln Day dinner on Saturday. (What? You can’t picture a more romantic setting than listening to different misinterpretations of the remarks of others for a few hours? You have no sense of adventure and romance! {*grin*})

It looks like the primary for county sheriff will be the exciting race this year. The former incumbent who lost 3 years ago is back and running via petition to avoid the party entirely. The sitting incumbent who beat the him is re-running too. And just to make sure the pot is stirred a bit more, the former under-sheriff is running too. It was one of the nastiest and muddiest races in local history three years ago; this time around looks to be even worse. My opponent for county commissioner and I joked that the sheriff’s race looked like so much fun that maybe we should have stood up and announced we had decided not to run for commissioner, but were both going to enter the sheriff’s race instead. It would have been worth it just for the brouhaha it would have created.

L and I spent the remainder of the weekend taking walks with Mollie, watching the Olympics, and just hanging together. Even occasionally holding hands and other such things. Truly the most romantic way to spend the long weekend with your loved one. Monday night our mothers brought over the ingredients and we cooked dinner and had cake in honor of L and my upcoming birthdays. Mine is tomorrow and then five days later it is L’s turn. (Yup, I am perpetually the “older man” in L’s life – a whole whopping five days older. And you will notice I resisted disclosing my age since it would reveal L’s as well. Actually, I’m turning 24 since I started counting backwards a few years ago.)

Tomorrow looks to be busy. I am invited down to fill the air-waves at the radio station with my political hot-air stylings in the morning, then I have to get the precinct material ready to be sent out for the campaign, and then in the evening I have another installment of the webinar from hell to attend for my job. (Think home land security meets animal welfare during a disaster. 3 hours of material that can make FEMA certification courses look exciting.) At least there will only be another pair of webinars and then I will be certified.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Being a guy, I always like to kill several birds with one stone. (It’s genetic, we just can’t help it.) So since L is stuck up in the mountains and I’m out here on the plains for Valentine’s Day *and* since Summer is having her blogversation challenge “I’ll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours” today, I figured I’d combine a Valentine Card for L with pictures featuring a couple of my favorite rooms here at the homestead. No video since I don’t have a working digital movie camera at the moment. So without further ado, here’s Bearie ….

“Hi (and aren’t I a cute Valentine Bear, even if Molly chewed me a bit the other day.) I’m sitting on a kitchen counter guarding a tub of Chex Mix for when L gets here next week. I hear she loves this stuff.”
For the room tourists, this looks from the kitchen into the family room.

Bearie takes a perch in the library out of the reach of Molly. But there is no L in sight, how sad.

A bit longer range view of the far wall of the library with Bearie peaking out and Molly going “What? Was that a flash that woke me?”

So now looking at the far end of the library. Note that Molly got disgusted and turned around to go back to sleep.

A view of the far end of the library looking into the kitchen hallway and the dining room.

“I’m about to leave the library, how about some tunes?”

Now Bearie is in the living room sitting on the coffee table. Bad bear – bears shouldn’t sit on tables.

So Bearie moved to the couch, just waiting for L to come and sit beside him.

Never a good bear for long, Bearie moved to the formal dining table at the end of the living room. Still a bad bear, sitting on the table.

“I moved to a chair on the other side of the room, it that OK?”

But then Bearie found the Christmas Pig and they curled up together on the other end of the living room. It was love at first sight until the Christmas Pig and Molly left to get all slobbery together. (The Christmas Pig was actually a chew-toy gift to Molly at Christmas.)

And finally, the other side/end of the living room. Bearie is being a bad bear, sitting on the piano. I think its time he took a nap.

So that takes care of the tour of my two favorite rooms, the library and the living room. Someday maybe I’ll do a tour of my ofice here, since it has almost as many book shelves and books as the library. You’d never guess that L and I are real book lovers. {*grin*} (Note that if you click on the pictures, they have a lot more clarity.)

L, I’ll see you next week when we celebrate our birthdays. Love you!
